A man and woman come together in marriage. Both have a common ground and an uncommon ground. If they start discussing the uncommon ground, their relations will become bitter. But if they speak about what is common to them, their relationship will strengthen. Later, even if they discuss on the uncommon ground, their relationship won't be affected. The same is true of neighbours, nations and politics.
Surah Aal Imran in the Quran gives us guidance: قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ تَعَالَوْا إِلَى كَلِمَةٍ سَوَاءٍ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمْ أَلَّا نَعْبُدَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ. Believers are being guided to speak to the People of the Book by coming to a common ground. Apparently, it is the People of the Book mentioned here. But this is a universal teaching. Whatever relation you have with someone, it should be based on common ground. For example, a man and woman come together in marriage. It is true everywhere. This is the wise method, the way of wisdom. Whatever your relations be with someone, adopt this method at every level. Speak on and deal with issues common between you and the other person. This will develop good relations between you two and a time will come when you can speak about issues that are not common between you.
